Supply List (required items + some suggestions)

THESE ARE THE MAIN SUPPLIES THAT I WILL USE IN OUR E-COURSE:

(You are not required to use the same products.)

GRAPHIC NOVEL ~ SUPPLY LIST:

  • 10 or more sheets of white practice paper (blank, lined or graphed). I use printer paper.
  • a light coloured pencil for your initial sketching. I use a col-erase or Pilot eno mechanical pencil usually in non-photo light blue.
  • Optional: a regular HB lead pencil.
  • a clean eraser. I like using white erasers from STAEDTLER.
  • Optional: a ruler either 6 or 12 inches long. If you have a clear one, that is easier to use, but not a must have.
  • 1 or 2 fine line water proof black in pens with a small and medium point/tip. I use Faber-Castel PITT pens in ‘S’ and ‘M’.
  • Optional: My favourite pen for inking variety width lines is the black Pilot brush tip pen. You do not need this pen though.
  • The paper I use in my classroom for our ‘good copy’ is three or more 9X12″ sheets of Bristol Smooth 100lb 260g by Canson. In the Video I am using Strathmore Visual Journal Spiral Bound, 9 by 12-Inch, Mixed Media Vellum. I like these types of paper, as the markers I mentioned above will not go through the paper, plus I can colour my work in many ways (watercolour, acrylic paint, pencil crayons, wax crayons, and more). If you only have printer paper, just make sure that you only do your work on one side of the sheet. NOTE: The number of pages you use, depends on how long your story is. This will be determined when we do our practice thumb nail work.
  • COLOURing your work: if you only have pencil and/or black marker, that is fine. Otherwise you can do all your colour work in wax crayons, or pencil crayons, or water colour paint, or matte finish acrylic paint (no gloss paints) or even a variety of the above. I show you how you can use these products in one of the videos in class.
  • If you will be using paint, make sure you have a water cup and some basic paint brushes. Mine are from the dollar store. I use a #10 shader, #10 round and a #2 round. The dollar store brand I buy has a dark blue handle with the name ‘Masterstroke’ on it. You will also need paper towel for cleaning your brushes.

I think I have covered all the items here. We go over our supplies during the first video segment in class as well. If you are buying any of these for the class, you can find Amazon links to my favourite supplies on my ‘Art Supplies’ page. These links will give you a good vidsual of what the products look like. Just remember that I am encouraging you to use what you already have at home. This is a class for having fun, and creating new fond memories. If you have any comics or graphic novels at home, use them for inspiration. See how they used colour, line work, narrative, framing and more.
